Mary, Trevor, and Blue.

Nope.
Red was not to be.
Instead Mary has a new brother called Blue.
Blue is a little rough around the edges, but then again what boy isn't.
We were his last hope, he came from a field of 100's of VW's and a few other strays who were all in a bad state lost to the world.
Some of which had had their hearts ripped out of them literally others had amputations.
Angle grinders, blow torches, and fork lifts have taken their toll.
A very sad place indeed.
So welcome Blue to a house of love, may your stay be long and safe.

By the way, Blue is a 1968 or 1969 1500 Beetle. The first of the 12Volt and disc brake front end Beetles here in Australia.

So the BIG question.

Is this the front of a car that should be bright and shinny again?

It would mean 2 trips down to Sydney, a 2000 klms round trip each time.

Valla Weekend

On the weekend of July 31 and August 1 2010. We went down to Nambucca Heads on the NSW Coast. We took my Mums Jetta, as, well, 'Mary' is still sitting on the trailer from when I picked her up. She is in the shed though so all is good.
Valla is held every second year. It's nearly a 1000klm round trip from Brisbane, just south of Coffs Harbour on the NSW coast. I had never been before.
It was lovely weather, very warm for winter.
I was hoping for alot of original bugs but they were hard to find.
I understand that when you own a bug it's really hard to resist doing just that little 'something' to it and I appreciate why people do it, some even look great, but stock standard cars are my favourite.
Included is an older 1960 model brother or sister to Mary. (Blue with white flash bug.)
Here are our favourites.

Bugs 1 & 2.

Here are beetles no 1 and 2 that I have owned. They are both 1960 models. The white one should be pale green the same as Mary, but a previous owner didn't like green. The blue one did not have the white side as new. The white ones rego numbers are NLS 412. The blue one I don't know, because I put black and white original looking plates on it, but took them off when I sold it.

If you know where these cars are now, I'd be interested to know. I'm in Brisbane - I think the white one went up to Bribie Island.

Mary comes home.

Welcome to my first blog ever.

Within this blog I intend to write about all things that I like.

I LIKE OLD VW'S!!!

The catalyst for starting a blog is Mary.

So,.. in November 2009,.. after first seeing 'Mary' in June 2008 on the internet she was on the way home with me.
Thanks must first go to long time friend Dylan for allowing me to use his Land Cruiser to drag Mary more than 1000 klms home.
Mary is beetle number 6 for me. That's a little crazy isn't it. My sixth beetle!!
But now that I've just become middle aged, I'm going to embrace my love of old cars instead of using common sense and only having my modern 'everyday' car.
Is this a stepping stone to becoming a 'silly old bugger' when I'm old???

To most she may not look like much, but, Mary has many redeeming features.

Firstly she is original,.. has never been smashed,.. has no structural rust,.. and has her original 'heart',..er,.. motor.

A full history on her will follow at a later stage.

She is called Mary because she is a one owner car (after having been 'held' by Steve Muller for a few years.) and her owners name was Mary Dray. So thank you Ms Dray for keeping her nice and original and not crashing into anything. This car is named in your honour.
